„„ By Georgia O’Connor-Harding FED-UP RESIDENTS living near a problematic alleyway in Hei Hei may at last get their wish to have it closed down. A proposal by the city council is out for public consultation on the closure of the alleyway that runs between Aurora St and Buchanans Rd. The public’s views will help the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board decide whether to progress with formal access-way closure procedures. In October a petition was signed by nearly 40 residents to close the alleyway down and presented to the community board. The petition addressed the issue of criminal activity residents had been dealing with. Residents wanted the alleyway owned by the city council in October to be shut down after enduring loud parties and fighting from Thursday to Sunday most weeks. They were left to clean up used needles, glass, dog faeces and blood. Resident Mary-Ann Belcher said it had taken the city council a long time to get round to having the public consultation. She said recently there had been the same issues of drunk people walking down the alleyway. Community board deputy chair-

woman Helen Broughton said it is really important people do comment on the consultation. “As long as the community wants it closed it can be closed. But if we get a divided community it makes it more difficult. It does depend on the response that comes back,� she said. The decision will be made by the community board in the following months after the consultation had closed. Ms Belcher and another resident Natasha McLean are currently looking at purchasing the land after the alleyway has closed. The consultation process closes on August 19. Hornby Primary designs revealed

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE MINISTRY of Education has revealed the new concept designs for Hornby Primary School as part of its $3.7 million redevelopment. The first stage of the redevelopment will include construction of a new administration space, library, spaces for 200 pupils and a multi-purpose space. The multi-purpose space will be available for use as a gymnasium, hall and other learning activities. The new teaching and administration block will be built on the school’s current netball courts and will be adjacent to the swimming pool. Ministry of Education head of infrastructure service Jerome Sheppard said work is planned to begin next month and tendering is currently out for the main contractors. He said the work will be carried out at the same time as the adjacent Hornby High School, with both schools scheduled to be completed in 2019. Hornby High is to be completely rebuilt with construction expected to begin in January and cost about $31 million.
NOTICE BOARD A community notice board will be placed in Harrington Park after about 50 residents signed a petition to have the notice board placed in a more central location. The petition was organised by resident Peter Simmonds. The community notice board was initially placed in Paeroa Reserve. The second community notice board will be installed by the city council.

Mr Roberts said when Branston Intermediate School closed at the end of 2013, year 7 and 8 students were moved into movable classrooms at Hornby High.

INDUSTRIAL INCIDENT The fire service was called to assist in freeing a man trapped under a sheet of metal at an industrial address on Annex Rd. Two appliances were sent from the Sockburn and Addington fire stations. The incident happened at about 9.10am on Saturday. The man was transported to Christchurch Hospital. Winter weather takes its toll on roads
Fashion By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer LAST WEEK I mentioned heading to a fire investigation about the time I was writing the column. That incident turned out to be the fatal fire that occurred in Woolston and involved several days on the scene for investigators. While inquiries continue, I can say that any situation in which people are living where flame is involved in any cooking, heating or lighting makes for a heightened level of risk from fire. I regularly report the instances of cooking or kitchen fires here. A call just before 6am last Saturday to a house in North New Brighton seemed a little early in the day. It turned out to be a baby’s bottle left sterilising in a pot on the stove
until the water boiled away and the plastic bottle started to burn. I’ve got to admit to sympathy for the poor mum or dad with memories from way, way back of the zombie-like state that months of broken sleep brings on. But it appears a smoke alarm that should have operated didn’t have a battery. Which could have made a bad situation tragic! Winter weather has had an effect on fire calls in the city. Crews attended 18 car crashes this week. They also went to 20 ambulance code purple assistance calls, of which eight involved fatalities. Cold, wet weather seems to be one of the influences. It means we should be extra careful driving just now and perhaps be a little more regular in our visits to elderly parents. Just in case!

Newly appointed Riccarton BushKilmarnock Residents’ Association chairman Tony Simons writes about the challenges facing the area I’ve only recently been elected as chairman, but already there’s plenty to do. The Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock Residents’ Association represents many of those living close to Westfield mall – the oldest and one of the biggest shopping malls in the city. That presents its challenges, but we also sit next to Riccarton Bush, arguably the most historically and environmentally significant area in the city. We cover north of Riccarton Rd between Riccarton Bush and the railway line and up to Matai St West. Over the years, the association has been involved with amenity preservation, beautification, as well as resisting commercial encroachment. We have participated in consultations on the university

cycleway project and the bus lounges on Riccarton Rd. The biggest issue recently was the proposed new district plan that would have allowed intensive multi-storey residential development. We fought that one hard. More than 100 residents turned up to oppose the planners’ proposals and, ignoring some who said we wouldn’t win, we submitted to the independent hearings panel and were listened to. As a result, our residential zoning is retained, and with it, much of the value that is core to what we are trying to preserve. Another perennial issue is parking. One part of our area is limited time parking and this has (thankfully) prevented the horrors of all-day, jam-packed parking. It gives space for parking by visitors to the area for events such as the farmers’ market, plays, gatherings, as well as providing short-term parking for shoppers and
residents’ family and friends. Currently, the city council is planning to extend these parking restrictions to parts of Kilmarnock, Harakeke and Jane Deans Cl. And, of course, next on the agenda will be a full city council review of parking across the city in 2017. Like most residents in the city, we are concerned about the apparent increase in mindless vandalism, graffiti and hooliganism. It seemed to get worse after the earthquakes and, while not as bad as some areas of the city, we have worked with the community board, police and Canterbury University on this issue. The area is under a liquor ban but also of some concern is the fact that more bars, with early morning closing, may be opening in the Westfield Mall precinct. This in spite of the city council stating its intention in future to cut back on opening hours for bars in suburban areas. So we’ve got plenty on. And, of course, the more people who join groups like ours, the louder the community voice. News Outdoor pantries possible Fashion By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MINI OUTDOOR pantries could start popping up around the western area of the city as part of an initiative to improve local community parks. The idea was proposed by deputy mayor Vicki Buck at the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board meeting as a way of connecting the community last week. Along with the outdoor pantry, a “library fridge” and an outdoor table to share vegetables in local parks were some of the other ideas she suggested. The concept was inspired by a cupboard of books open to the public on Barbadoes St and around the world. Cr Buck said the community board had been looking at a range of ideas after a reserve on the corner of Dilworth St and Picton Ave was identified as a park needing a clean-up. She said a community group would need to maintain the facilities and is planning to run a Facebook status to find out who is interested. If the ideas go ahead they would be supported by the community board’s discretionary

Buck’s idea, the food pantry and library fridge was not as easy as it sounds. He said the neighbourhood box for people to put their excess produce set up by Oasis Baptist Church in Hei Hei after the earthquakes had to be shut down.
“There were mattresses, wheels, prams and God knows what arrived in there,” Mr Mora said. He said the initiative had to be shut down because it was turned into a dumping ground and it cost the church a fortune to have the rubbish removed. Mr Mora said the community board will however, look into the proposals. The ideas were endorsed by Riccarton West Neighbourhood Group’s Sheree Wharewhiti. She said the outdoor food pantry was a great idea but there would need to be non-perishable items like canned food. “The nice thing about trying some of these things is really the cost of trying them is close to nothing. If they work fantastic, if they don’t, nothing ventured, nothing gained,” Cr Buck said. The initiative has been forwarded on to the city council. In Brief SMALL GRANTS MEETING The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board will be holding small grants fund assessment committee agenda this Wednesday. The purpose is to consider and make decisions on the applications received for funding from the 2016/17 Small Grants Fund. The meeting will be held at 4pm at the Fendalton Service Centre on the corner of Jeffreys and Clyde Rd. COMMUNITY CENTRE A notice of motion was made at a Riccarton-Wigram Community Board meeting last week to ensure a temporary service centre stays in the central Riccarton area. City council staff are in the process of finding a location for a temporary service centre. A request was made by deputy mayor Vicki Buck for city council staff to report back to the community board within two months if a temporary facility or co-location for the building could not be found. CAR CRASH A person sustained moderate injuries after a car crash on Curletts Rd last week. St John was alerted to the incident at 10.27am on Sunday. One ambulance was sent to the scene. The woman was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

He spoke to reporter Caitlin Miles about how he hasn’t let cerebral palsy stop him from competing and what inspired him to become a paralympic athlete Congratulations on getting a grant from Inspire Foundation. Thank you. Yeah, it’s really cool, it’ll help me out a lot to get things I need before heading to Rio. I’m really thankful that they gave me the money. They’re a great foundation. How much money did you receive? What will it go towards? I got $1000, so that will go towards paying for orthotics and shoes and that kind of stuff. The New Zealand Paralympics covers our entry costs and stuff, which is a big relief because it’s not cheap. The money I got from the foundation can be focused on getting me the things I need for it, not just pay to compete. Congratulations too on heading to Rio – are you excited? I fly out tomorrow so I’m pretty excited. I’ve been doing a lot of training and stuff so it’s still pretty surreal. The other people I’ve met in the paralympic team are really great so it’s going to be
really cool. How long have you been training for? I kind of never stop training. It gets ramped up and more intense closer to the time, but I’m always training. When I went to the world champs in Doha, I didn’t know I was going until about two weeks before. I didn’t think I had got in so, when I found out I had, there was a bit more pressure to train harder. I had been training constantly anyway, but that uncertainty was annoying. It was such a big event and competition to be a part of so the idea of missing out was hard, so it was even better when I found out I had got in. How did you fund that? It must have been hard to get all the money and everything together in a short amount of time? Well my parents were really good about it. They helped me out big time with getting everything together in not much time. I guess it was such a big

thing for me and a really great opportunity they didn’t want me to miss out either. Is this your first year going to
the paralympics? Yeah, it is. It’s really exciting to be going over. What classifies you as a
paralympian? I have cerebral palsy so the left side of my body is a bit slower and doesn’t react as quickly. I was classed as T28, which was bit too hard for me to compete in. I am now classed at T36 and that made a big change to how I can compete. It’s much easier for me and I compete better and a little easier, which gives me a good chance to compete professionally and go to worlds and stuff. Why did you decide to become an athlete? I have always been pretty active. I enjoy sport. It wasn’t until I saw the 2012 London Paralympics and I thought, ‘I can do that, why can’t I do that?’ So I decided to get serious about it and see what I can do. So you’ve been competing for four years? No, not at first. I wanted to get into running and see what it was like. I joined the Port Hills Athletics Club and I started long distance running with the club. It wasn’t until 2014 when I started training properly for competitions. What events do you compete in? I do the 400m, 800m running events and the long jump.

paralympic debut at Rio games
JUMPER: William will compete in the long jump, as well as the 400m and 800m events, at Rio.
What events do you compete in? I do the 400m, 800m running events and the long jump. How often do you train and what’s involved? I train roughly seven times a week. That’s about 10-11 hours. It might not sound like much but it’s pretty high intensity stuff. I do a lot of different exercises
over the week. I’ll do short distance running, long distance, endurance stuff, running up and down stairs and hills, gym sessions and all of that kind of stuff. I usually get two days off a week. Sometimes I’ll train on Sundays, though. How does your body cope with that? Do your muscles struggle?
No my muscles handle it pretty well, but my left side is just slower and I have less muscle control over it so it doesn’t move as well. I started off running long distances and then I switched to shorter distances. I think it’s because my body can handle shorter distances better. I’m more of a middle distance runner now. As I get older, I might go back to

paralympics are getting more support and recognition, which is really cool. It’s not so hidden anymore. There is a lot more support for us athletes, which I think is a really great thing to see. doing longer distances. How do you balance school and training? Is it your first year of exams? Yeah, I’m doing NCEA level 1 this year, so there is a bit going on. My school is really supportive of my sport so that’s a big help. They understand there is a lot going on so I balance it. I’ve got to stay really motivated to be able to do both. Do you ever worry about cerebral palsy stopping you from running and competing? I never really think about it to be honest. I make sure I look after myself. It’s important to me to compete and be a good athlete, but I also know to look after myself. I’m not too worried about having to stop. Not at this stage anyway. I have had a couple of injuries but nothing too serious. I had a bone stress injury in my foot when I competed, which was painful, but nothing that has made me think about stopping. Has anyone ever told you that you shouldn’t be an athlete because of cerebral palsy? No. I’m really lucky. I’ve had so much support from my parents and my friends and my school. My coach, George Edwards, is really great, too. I also think

Motoring A CCTV camera was stolen from Hornby Primary School last Tuesday. Three young adults were caught on another of the school’s CCTV cameras allegedly stealing and vandalising property last Tuesday at about 10.20pm. The footage showed three individuals walking off with one of the security cameras. Inquiries are continuing and police are working towards iden-
tify the offenders. Acting Senior Sergeant Dan Harker said several people had come forward online to identify the alleged offenders, but an investigation had not been carried out yet. By Georgia O’Connor-Harding NATIONAL Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art students took to the stage recently in a bid to showcase their talent and fundraise for their next production. The third-year students raised money for the special effects and costumes for their upcoming musical Ragtime, written by American writers Stephen Flaherty, Terrence McNally and Lynn Ahrens. It will open next month. They took the opportunity to preview a snippet of the upcoming production. Our Children, a song from the musical, was previewed at the concert. The production is based on the book by E.L Doctorow and covers three families pursuing the American dream. Erin Wells, of Avonhead, was one of the performers in the show and will take part in the production of the Ragtime next month. A variety of contemporary and musical theatre was

performed at the concert, along with solos, duets, contemporary dance, tap dance, cultural and full ensemble numbers. Performances included songs from the musicals Wicked, The Full Monty and Once. Third year student Sophie Petersen said the preview concert was student-led and provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase performers from the academy. “To come together as students
to produce an event with flavours for every audience member, it proved to be a very rewarding process,” she said. About 50 performers from the entire school performed in the preview show. Ragtime will be performed at the Gym in the Christchurch Arts Centre from September 1-4. Tickets are available at www. eventbrite.co.nz

Rising auctioneer ACHIEVERS star recognised By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A LICENSED real estate consultant and auctioneer based in Hornby has been recognised at a national auctioneering competition. Sam Steele, of Harcourts Four Seasons Reality Ltd, gained first place in the rising star category at the REINZ National Auction Championships. The competition was held in Auckland last month. “It was an awesome thing to get under the belt after a lot of months worth of training,” he said. In the six months leading up to the national competition Mr Steele was mentored by professional auctioneers Phil and Mark McGoldrick. “I’ve been really lucky here in the city. Harcourts produce pretty much the best auctioneers in the world. I was lucky to be mentored by a couple of guys who are absolute legends.” The competition required contestants to perform a mock auction in front of a crowd including three to seven judges with a bidding script. “They ask you tough questions to throw you off . . . a lot of the time it is legal questions,” he said. Contestants were judged on factors including personal ability,

WHEN ANGELO Scott won a most improved award at the recent Ara Youth Guarantee Awards, it was an emotional moment for his family. Training for Angelo, who is autistic, at the Ara Institute of Canterbury has been a big journey for both him and his family. “We weren’t expecting an award. It’s the first time in his life he has won anything. It was a big moment for us as well. I burst out crying,” his father Peter Scott said. The lady next to me asked why I was crying and I said, ‘that’s my son’, then she started crying and my wife was also crying”. After secondary school, the Wigram resident joined a supported learning programme at Ara called Workskills. The programme is designed especially for students with intellectual disabilities. After joining Workskills,
Angelo transitioned into the Youth Guarantee programme. It is a supported learning stream for 15 to 19-year-olds and is the only level two supported learning programme in New Zealand. Youth Guarantee tutor Bill Bryce said Angelo’s improvement in his cookery class had been “exceptional”. “When Angelo first arrived, for the first few days I was worried . . . at the start he would not try things because of lack of confidence and would expect help but not ask for it,” he said. But Mr Bruce said Angelo is now excelling in his cookery. “He will now attempt tasks and will ask for help directly if he needs it. He always tries hard,” Mr Bryce said. Angelo’s parents said he is now cooking a lot more at home too. When he was asked if he liked his cooking class, he said it was “really cool”.

Finalist in line for Countdown award A CHURCH Corner Countdown staff member has been announced as one of the top four finalists contending for the national store manager of the year. Madison Taylor has claimed the top spot in the South Island beating 39 other store managers. Ms Taylor first began working
part-time for Countdown when she was 15-years-old. Thirteen years on she has made her way up through the company to store manager. “I’ve been really lucky to have such supportive mentors throughout my career and it’s a huge sense of pride seeing the rest of the team achieve their
goals,” she said. Ms Taylor has worked at several Countdown stores throughout the country and encourages people to grab every opportunity. She first started working in the deli section on Waiheke Island part-time before moving around to Auckland, Timaru
and now Christchurch. “I’ve taken every opportunity thrown my way and love the different challenges I am faced with each day,” she said. The Countdown national store manager of the year will be announced at an awards dinner in Auckland on August 29.

Industry expert invites Villa student back to US A VILLA Maria College student has been asked to return to the United States next year after achieving high results at a world performing arts competition last month. Year 13 student Sophie Holt was selected to represent New Zealand at the World Championships of Performing Arts last month in Long Beach, California. She won six awards at the competition including an industry medal, three “silver awards” for the contemporary, country and pop categories for 18 to 24-year-olds. Sophie also won a gold award for the original works category and an overall gold award for 16 to 24-year-olds. Now she has been invited to return to the US next year to perform her original songs by music industry professional Jeffrey Weber. “I never signed a contract but I’m hopefully heading back next year to record my songs with him,” Sophie said. Mr Weber has been in the American music industry for more than 30 years and has worked with American singer and actress Ariana Grande’s musical director. He was the founder of
American television network Studio M and has produced more than 180 CDs. Sophie is a singer-songwriter and one of 21 New Zealanders who was selected to travel to the US to compete. The competition started with a boot camp which consisted of workshops ran by professionals from the New York Film Academy. Sophie said the boot camp was beneficial and gave an insight into how the industry works. The competition was set up in three rounds. After each round, judges who were interested in talking with competitors about their talent were issued “go see slips”. Sophie received three of the slips. Adventure in Kaikoura for Burnside students BURNSIDE HIGH School students went on an adventure in Kaikoura recently as part of their year 13 geography studies. The students spent their time collecting primary data in the field as part of their research assessment on sustainable tourism in Kaikoura. Highlights were seeing the Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses in the Kaikoura Ranges, whalewatching, and having the opportunity to see Ohau Stream baby seals up close. The students also had
a go at the Kaikoura Peninsula Walk and attend a talk by Kaikoura District Council planner Rachel Vaughn at The Kaikoura Landfill and Recycling Centre. Burnside High enrolment and publicity officer Bernadette Shaw said the class stayed at the Canterbury Underwater Club lodge for the first time which proved to be a “very comfortable base”. ‘It was a pleasure to work with such a great bunch of students and staff,” she said.

Semi-final fixtures confirmed By Gordon Findlater CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High School has qualified for the UC Championship semi-finals in second position following a 19-13 victory over Shirley Boys’ High School. Saturday’s victory had extra meaning for Christchurch BHS after suffering a 17-25 upset at the hands of Shirley in last year’s semi-final. They will now play Nelson College in this weekend’s semifinal. The two teams couldn’t be separated when they met in May, sharing the points in a six-all draw. Christ’s College go into this weekend’s semi-finals as the top seed after a 67-19 demolition job of St Andrew’s. They will host Shirley Boys’
High School who qualified in fourth position. Shirley rugby manager John Fox knows how tough getting a result against the competition’s top side will be. Meanwhile, it was an agonising wait for Burnside High School who had a bye on the weekend. They were forced to wait on Saturday’s results to find out if they would have a chance to defend the fifth-place plate title they won last year. After both Waimea and Marlborough won Saturday’s early games, Burnside were left relying on St Andrew’s College to come away from their game against Christ’s College empty handed. A bonus point for finishing within seven points or for scor-
ing four tries would have been enough for St Andrew’s to claim eighth spot. However, Christ’s 67-19 demolition job meant that Burnside snuck into eighth spot, setting up a semi-final clash with Timaru Boys’ High School. The two schools met in Timaru in early July, where Burnside took home a narrow 14-12 win. They will arrive at lunchtime to mix and mingle with the students. They will visit the school to launch Canterbury Rugby’s ‘Adopt a School’ programme, which sees players matched up with schools from around the region as a way of building connections with some of the team’s youngest fans. An afternoon of fine jazz Maestro Doug Caldwell performs the first concert at the new venue 'The Piano', Centre for Music & the Arts, on Sunday the 14th August at 3pm. Doug is an icon of the jazz world and has been performing for the past 72 years, debuting in 1944 as pianist in The Staretta Trio, at the age of 16 years. He played at the Malando regularly for 15 years then joined the Brian Marston Band playing in the Winter Gardens regularly. He studied arranging and composition at Michigan State University USA in 1956 and upon returning to New Zealand as well as being very much in the music scene in Christchurch, was then musical director for Radio New Zealand and Television New Zealand for many years. Doug taught at the Christchurch Polytechnic Jazz School for 14 years and retired as Lecturer Emeritus in 2005 and in his honour the auditorium at the Jazz School is named after him.
